Can't get headsets with built in mic to work on my PC

I've tried just about everything with two different headsets with mics. They both have the standard mic headphone jacks and I can get audio going into the headphones from the pc but when I try to talk there's only static from my end. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my case or if its something I'm not doing with my audio on my computer or something but I would appreciate the help.

Solution
If you have the 1 plug or 2 plugs sorted out, the only other things is, there are condenser mic and electrostatic mic, not interchangeable.
When you say they have standard mic/headphone jacks....I'll assume you mean mic/headphone plugs. The jack is in the PC.

Is the jack in the PC a mic/headphone jack?

If not....there's your problem.

If so....and it does it on two separate headphones...I might suspect there is something wrong with the jack.

I'm pretty sure it's not broken. I've tried both on other devices and they work. It's not split into a mic and audio plug but there is a mic and an audio plug on my pc and I've tried using both of them and they haven't worked. If these don't end up working I'll probably just buy a USB headset.
