Solved! Carpet with no underlay vs hardwood

Should i install a carpet with no underlay or keep my hardwood floor? I'm not sure if the underlay is important for dampening the echo in my room.

Just to be certain your plan is:

Hardwood floor (leave in place), underlay, carpet - correct?

Underlay is part of carpeting and generally recommended.

To reduce echo carpet would do the job... but then again, a large rug would also do the job and not be anywhere near as permanent or potentially damaging to the hardwood floor.

Hardwood is better looking, I would just use a rug.
