That fact that service providers make it so hard to switch your device to another provider is BS. If locking a device to a service provider wasn't a legal practice theft/crime wouldn't really be any easier. Letting you switch to a new provider isn't the same as most of what this post talks about. Besides How can they sell you something but not allow you to do whatever with it. Modifying your own property has nothing to do with copy right.

You need to contact your Service Provider because they are the only people who can close your account. If the thief or the finder is using Mobile Data or just making calls, you are responsible for the money that adds to your account.

That's a good reason for doing that now! They might even tell you where the phone was when last used.
