How long until the Government here in the U.S. finally gets their way and begins regulating the internet? They've spoken about it. The last thing we need is the FCC regulating what we can and cannot access (and say/type) on the internet.

It's a shame this happens in China and it'd be a shame if it happened here.

Doesn't need to be a communist country...

Last year, here in Brazil, a judge ordered ISP's to block all access to YouTube because a famous TV artist (Daniela Cicarelli) had been caught on video having sex with her boyfriend in a private beach and the video was published in YouTube. After the artist filed a legal complaint against YouTube, the judge understood that while the video wasn't removed from the site, then all the site should be made inaccessible. Pathetic, but true.

The video can be easily found all over the net, anyway... :D

In all honesty you can't censor the internet. With so much new content coming up every day it would be impossible to review and accept in a timely manner. So the only method is to restrict the "offending" websites access which of course wouldn't help because to counter the censorship people would only make new sites displaying the same content that got it banned in the first place. Take down that site and another one will just pop up if not several.

Censorship also only causes a reverse effect anyways and only fuel the desire of the people to see the censored content. The whole thing backfires in the end. I wonder how many Chinese people are secretly watching the video right now.

That's not the point. It's like AdamB5000 posted - how long before other governments start censoring the net? It seems that in Australia there's a proposal to ban access to any sites considered pornographic:

Well, i'll be one to say I cannot let this happen. If Canada decides to do this same thing, i'll be the first to Grab everyone I know and tell them what this means. A place that is neutral, allows everyone to access what they want when they want will be restricted as if they knew what was good for us. We want our free rights, and the right to search WHAT we want on the Internet WE PAY FOR should be free for as long as the internet exists. I just wish Protesting would mean more, unfortunately in ALL countries.. protesting doesn't mean a damn thing. They never actually change their minds completely because of protesting, they just "offer" a new idea that still fulfills their original idea.

This cannot be done. When a Government has too much power, things go down hill. Democracy is beginning to look like this.

We say "Don't go to Iraq, there is no need" Nothing changes at all. Regardless of what the population wants, things will be done.

After a few beers I find I can be VERY critical of our Government. (Canada)
I don’t believe we are “free” at all. I am as free as the Government lets me be.

The Government doesn’t give a rat’s ass about you and me.

I hope that by the time China becomes the #1 Power in the world (inevitable as it is ...) things will have changed A LOT there. Can you imagine a Super Power whose leaders think that YouTube is a threat to the stability of the country?
I pity the future generations ....

Oh, by the way, always remember Tiananmen 1989

Although this article has to do with obvious political censorship, are there any times where censorship might be justifiable in the "neutral and open" internet?

Would you want a site that promotes pedophilia and teaches predators how to lure away children because it is labeled "for informational purposes only"? Would you want a web site that tells angst ridden teens how to acquire guns, make explosives, secure schools, and systematically kill everyone inside? How about a chat forum for criminals - a place where people could get together and conspire to commit crimes. Maybe plan to blow up a building, rob a bank, kill someone. Heck, how about eHit - the eBay for those looking to get someone bumped off.

Now I know so many people will say "but those are sites promoting illegal activities". This is a valid point, none of us would say that illegal activities should be allowed in a neutral net.

Yet, by that logic, the "for informational purposes" sites would be allowed to remain due to a loophole. (This is akin to Pirate Bay's loophole where they are only providing information and it is up to the user to decide to commit the crime, which so many here are okay with.)

Also, who's laws apply when deciding what is "illegal"? US law? Chinese law? Swedish law? Iranian law? The internet is a global network, why should one nation's view of law and propriety dominate a global system?

I've presented a counter argument to the "no censorship ever" on the net - so my question to those who comment is this:

Is there every a set of circumstances where censorship on the internet is justified or ethical? If so, where is that line drawn? If not, how do you reconcile a nation's right to sovereignty (and thus ability to define laws) with this completely open and unregulated information distribution system?

why doesn't youtube simply ban that video to china, I mean, I can't see a lot of videos in my country and the message "this video is not available in your country" shows up! Simply do that, show to the authorities that people can't see that vid and let Chinese people use Youtube.

I didn't read your entire post, but what you speak of is illegal in this country. If you begin a website that promotes pedophilia, expect to have a search warrant issued for your house and computer.

Your examples are extreme. It's like saying, "What if I have a website saying I'm going to recruit friends to invade a high school and open fire with three AK47's?" You're free to say that on the internet, just beware of the consequences.

These sites are illegal, and once found are shut down from the source by the law. This isn't a good example as to why our Internet should be Censored, because again these sites are shut down once reported by 1 single person.
