With current clamshell phones closed the small square external
screens present the caller's phone number in a tiny font. (One phone
even had to scroll the phone number horizontally to show all 10
digits!)

So, besides giving people in your phone's phone book individualized
ringers, or images to display on the exterior display, what other tips
do you clamshell users have for dealing with those small displays?

Thanks!

Nope, that's about all you can do.

On my Sanyo 2500, SETUP gives a choice of 2 font sizes.

settings, display, font size.

Also one can have Photo Caller ID with a picture of who is calling. It
requires downloading the pic, and then configuring the phone book, but
doable.

You didn't mention which phone you're using, but I think my Samsung A620
(VGA1000) has a pretty readable external caller ID. But besides using a
photo for the ID, the phone also comes with a gallery of 47 cutesy
images (22 people + 15 animals + 10 other) that you can assign to callers.

You can also assign different ringers to particular phone book entries
and maybe also groups of entries.
