The hardware costs on getting a multi-touch vs a single touch screen is negligible. At the bulk rates they will be making these at, it is at most $5 in parts -> $10-$20 more at retail. though as Nintendo tends to make a profit on all of their hardware sales from launch, the increase could be nothing, if they expected to shift a reasonable amount of software with each console.

Zero force touches are easier on the hands and give more options for programmers. It is easy enough to ignore second or third touches on a multi touch system.

The issue is that people are now used to multi touch smart phones and tablets, hence not having an expected feature will cause a number of complaints and disgruntled customers.

There will in all likelihood be a second-gen one that has multi touch in a couple of years akin to the "motion plus" addon for the Wii-mote, or the endless parade of DS variants.

There is something to be said for the Wii's focus on innovative software, though how introducing limitations to your controllers can improve this is beyond me.
