My point had nothing to do with the item though. If you can spread out payments on ANYTHING without interest, it always makes sense to spread it out, since inflation will make that a better deal [plus the ability to invest the difference over the period of the 'loan'].
With the car not being a luxury-- well, instead of having $400 payments on a Ford Fusion, why not get a Honda Civic [that has less room, power, features] for $250 per month? Or get a Nissan Versa or a Hyundai Accent or Toyota Yaris or Mazda2 for even less... Or if you really just need transportation- my cousin bought his low mile 1996 Ford Taurus for $200.
Unless you bought a dirt cheap used car, you almost certainly could call your car a luxury, no matter how important it is to get to work.
