Connect Laptop to TV

Hi, I have LG LN5710 smart tv of 42 inches. I want to play movies on my TV through laptop. I have, VGA cable (male-male), Aux cable and one HDMI to VGA convertor. But, it doesn't connect to the laptop. Can anyone help me here. Please...!!

what model laptop ? Also, many times it is the crappy convertors messing it up.

Sorry if times are rough i apologise, but I suggest an cheap 42"+ or rather new LCD TV with HDMI to be relevant and avoid patching analog. TVs's aren't necessarily dear and by the time you spend money on converters, it could be spent elsewhere on something already like a TV capable of doing what you want.

may solve your problem. HDMI inputs do not have audio inputs associated with them so you need a converter that will combine the audio and video.
You will need to set the TV as an extended monitor and set the resolution to be compatible with the TV. You may also have an issue about the TV "handshaking" with the laptop so you have to make the laptop see the TV so the 2nd screen activates and then switch the TV back and forth quickly so it can detect the laptop. Try different combinations.
