Connect TV to Sound Bar

I have an LG 42LH2000 tv and want to connect it to a sound bar I have just purchased, a Toshiba 3D SB1, any ideas?

Headphone out (side) TV to 3.5mm line-in jack Toshiba
or
Optical out (rear) TV to optical in Toshiba

Tried the first one, but there is hardly any sound coming through even on full and there is a high pitch whistle that only I seem to hear. When my son comes round tomorrow I will get him to take the tv off the wall and look for the second option. Thank you for your quick response.

You're welcome. Can you test a headset with the TV side connector?

Use the optical out connection, much better sound quality and you can run surround sound though that.
If you can't hear anything using the headphone out, you may not have the connector all the way in.
Or you don't have power connected to the soundbar.

Thank you so much to both of you. We have it working with the headphones out, it doesn't make a tremendous amount of difference, but there is a difference. I think what I will do is buy an optical cable, that wasn't supplied with the unit. Strange thing is I was advised to buy an HDMI cable, which I dutifully did, only to find there isn't a fitting for the cable on the sound bar. But again, thank you for your help. Wendy x
