Connecting older receiver to new tv

I have a Harman/Kardon AVR 225 receiver that I cannot get to work with my new Samsung television. I am trying to go through my magnavox vcr/dvd player and it does not work. Any ideas on what I can do or buy to get it to work?

Connect the DVD/VCR to the TV. Connect the optical audio out of the TV to one of the optical inputs on the receiver. You may have to assign the connection to an input (optical 1 to DVD for instance).
