My Sony vaio running windows 7 (home basic sesrvice pack 1 64bit 4GB RAM) shuts down frequently and the CPU usage is 100% most of the time. The media player (smplayer,VLC) lags then hangs and then machine shuts down when started windows shows bluescreen error code. Firefox (V43) used lot of memory so switched to chrome still problem exists. any help in layman terms would be really helpful.

Hi,

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help.
- Start by loading your laptop into Safe Mode so you could do some troubleshooting.
- While the laptop is booting up repeatedly press on F8 until it loads Advanced Boot Option then select Safe Mode with Networking.
- Once in Safe Mode run a complete virus/malware scan. Use the link below for the tools and guide.

- Once done and if the same problem will persist your laptop option would be to reinstall Windows 7.
- Here's how to do a complete factory reset with your laptop.
