Crashed hard disk shows up in devices but not in Disk Management

I'm trying to recover what personal files I can from a 2 TB Seagate internal hard disk. The free recovery programs won't work when I have the disk plugged in to a USB drive. Windows Explorer shows it as an I drive, but it won't read it. I'm using a SABRENT USB 3.0 TO SATA/IDE HARD DRIVE ADAPTER.

Will the professional programs work in this situation or is there something else going on that I need to fix?

thanks in advance
Jim

Hi Marinoni,

you can just click on the word In-Lab Recovery Service which leads to the following website:
http://www.seagate.com/services-software/recover/in-lab-recovery
Opening a case there is straight forward and as mentioned, free of charge if recovery is not possible.

However, we absolutely agree that you should try out some software recovery services first!
There is even some decent free software out there:
You can just start by researching on web engines which ones people rank among the best. We have had good experiences with Recuva as a PC guy, but have heard good things about EASE US Recovery Wizard and TestDisk/PhotoRec for Mac, you just have to do some research about what's worked for...

It depends on how badly your drive is crashed.
If there is physical damage, then that's it for the drive.
If it's just a corrupt partition, recovery software should be able to see the drive.

So, might the purchase of professional 'level' recovery software help me recover files? The disks are spinning when I put power to it, but the free recovery programs aren't seeing anything.

Update. Windows Explorer is seeing the drive and giving it a J label. I click on this drive and it can't read it, then deletes it from the list after 10 or 15 seconds of trying to read it. So, it acknowledges the drive existence.

Back to my original inquiry, do you think that using non free recovery program might help me recover the files? Have I provided enough info to answer that question?

Completely unknown. There is no way to tell until you try it.

Yup, that's I figured. Really appreciate your input though, it confirmed my vague thoughts.

Hi Marinoni,

sorry to hear your Seagate drive stopped working. However, if you would like to give it a try, you can open up a case with our In-Lab Recovery Service and speak to one of our specialists to discuss this a bit further. The good news - in case the data can't be recovered, the service is free of charge!

Thanks for using Seagate!

Well, my other option was to purchase a recovery program, DMDE. It's free version is showing me it has found files, or so I think. How can I contact you?

Google magic. It's only after trying, and failing these options that I would then look into lab recovery because it can be pricey.

Hope that helps...
