Dell D420 laptop no audio in windows xp sp3

Hi Everyone,

I have a Dell D420 laptop and I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP SP3 on it and everything installed fine, but I can only get sound from the headphone jack and not the speaker. I did run Dell diagnostic utility and the speaker worked fine in there, so I know its Windows related, but I can not figure it out for anything. I installed the NSS System software, then Intel chipset and then the Sigmatel audio software and still nothing. If anyone could help me I sure would appreciate it.

I'm assuming your drivers are updated then and you tested without the headset connected. Sometimes HD audio/modem devices are not recognized even after installation of proper drivers. Thanks for the reply. I tried all the solutions on the link you sent me with no success. any other ideas I sure would appreciate.
