My laptop shuts down without the charger connected...how can I know whether the battery is to be replaced or there is any other problem?

Connect the charger. If everything else works, then it's the battery.

If the laptop runs correctly using the power adapter with or without the battery installed, but does not run with just the battery, you have a bad battery.
