Dell Inspiron Pricing

Beware of Dell pricing policies. I ordered an Inspiron at 10% off but
before I received it the discount went to 15% off. Dell will not adjust the
price unless I return the machine and order another one. Ridiculous. That
will cost me shipping fees and cost Dell to process and ship another order.
Makes no sense.

Do not buy from Dell

Go see your friendly local computer store.

They change their specials every week, just like many other companies.

You think that's bad. I live in Austin, TX where Dell is located. I was
going to order a machine from them and when I asked them where I could come
pick it up, they said they would ship it to me via UPS. They were going to
charge me $100 to ship the computer across town. I said, "No Thanks.".

Tell them you are going to return it for a full refund and see how they
change their tune...

The laptops are made in Malaysia and are then shipped to, I believe,
Tennessee where they are distributed. Not everything goes through
Austin.

Dell explained things to me. They have a 30 day period starting with your
invoice date where you can request a price adjustment one time. The invoice
date is usually the ship date so you may have several days before you
actually receive the merchandise, but the 30 day period has already started.
They compare your base price with the current base price and if it is $50 or
more different they will refund you the difference. You may only do this
once in the 30 days. Not that bad of a policy.
However, the price comparison is on the base price. Promotion prices are
not included. So they get around it by calling a special price a promotion.
In my case I custom built a system online and received 10% off the total.
The following week before I received my system Dell changed the promotion to
15% off. I bulit the identical system online and ended up with the exact
price before discount. I would have saved $112.10 if I received the 15% off
promotion rather than the 10% off.
After speaking with 3 or 4 people at Dell, it is obvious that they have
little concern for customer relations.
I could still get the 15% off if I return my system and reorder during the
15% off promotion period. Of course, the shipping charges are on me. What
a policy!
In contrast the local retail computer stores do treat customers well, based
on my experience, and will cheerfully refund the difference should an item
go on sale at their store or a competitor's store.
I believe all of the above is true and correct, but I urge you check Dell's
policy before you order. I think you will find that the local outlet of the
large computer/appliance stores will have more customer friendly policies.

that's what you get when shopping with the #1 computer maker in the
world. you are nothing but an insignificant sales blip on their billion
dollar radar screen.

this is why local retailing is always the best choice in the end, not
only for computers, but for things like hardware (read DIE WALMART) and
other things too.

support the local retailer. they're the ones who really care. they
answer to you, the customer, not to shareholders.

They do care, as well as a few other vendors online.

Also, just because a retailer is local does not automatically make them ok
to deal with

no doubt they do... they're not the #1 computer manufacturer in the world.
my point was that if you're not a behemoth of a company, you're more likely
to provide better customer service and care what the customer thinks.

that's for sure. but personally, i feel good when i go spend my money at
the local hardware store and buy my supplies there instead of walmart. i'm
supporting my community's economic health, not the economic health of
shareholders.
