My sons laptop won't recover from standby mode, without a reboot.. It's a dell Inspiron E1500.....Any ideas??

Check power saving settings in BIOS and/or Windows. Otherwise this is one for Dell's support staff.

Rajab: detach external monitor and power up the computer -- point a torchlight at the screen. If you can see Windows the backlighting has failed -- if nothing, the screen has failed.
