I have a Dell latitude laptop. It is 2 year old. The monitor went out
all of a sudden. Only the top 1/3 of the diplay is working and it
appears faded. Does anyone know if this normal for this to happen?

This is just a guess, but:

Maybe something is partially-blocking the lamp (there is only one lamp
tube, and it is at the bottom of the screen). Or maybe you have a short
that cut the voltage to both the lamp and the display electrnics.

When you say the top third is working do you mean theres a line and
definite point where the video stops? If so this sounds like screen
failure. Backlight replacement would be if you are having a dim screen
situation or black raster.

well since I can't see the problem try connecting to a external monitor to
rule out the video card.
It could be a connection problem with a wire or the monitor screen.

Not normal, but not impossible for this kind of hardware failure to
occur. If you didn't buy a 3-year warranty, it's going to be a very
expensive repair, and will probably exceed the value of your laptop...

Yes there is a line and a definite point where the video stops.

It does work with an external monitor.
