As the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 uses Windows 10, users must take the usual precautions to protect their system from harm. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 virus, spyware and malware security guide is for all of you who want to protect yourself and not depend on the system to do it for you.

The standard Windows Defender and Window Firewall are not up to standard for protecting you against emerging threats. While you get 12 months free McAfee LiveSafe with your laptop, not everyone likes that software. It doesn’t contain a firewall, malware scanner or antivirus anyway. If you want to arrange your own computer security, read on.

If you don’t want to use McAfee LiveSafe, that’s fine. It doesn’t contain a firewall, malware scanner or antivirus so isn’t really relevant here. Just remember to uninstall the product before adding any new security software as not doing so can cause conflicts.

Antivirus – All computers need antivirus software running at all times. Choosing a product can be difficult but Tom’s Guide has a roundup that might help. Read ‘Best Antivirus Software and Apps 2017’ to make an informed choice.

Spyware – Spyware is insidious. It sneaks onto your computer and harvests personal data and logs keypresses. I use Spybot because it has a small footprint, runs well and picks up the vast majority of spyware.

Malware – Malware, or malicious software encapsulates a range of programs that do everything from delete files to lock your computer for ransom. I tend to rely on Malwarebytes. It’s free and very, very good at what it does.

Firewall – Windows firewall only looks at traffic coming into your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and not at what goes out. That’s fine for occasional internet use but won’t stop a determined attacker getting in or malware or spyware getting your data out. A third party firewall is a must. Again, Tom’s Guide has done the hard work for you in ‘Best Antivirus Software and Apps 2017’ as some also contain a firewall. Otherwise, try this guide.

To fully protect your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and yourself, you need one of each of these software types running on your computer. Whether you elect for a free or a paid-for version is up to you. The only difference is in the features offered, not in the quality of protection.
