I am looking to replace my desktop with a new laptop/workstation. I am looking at one that can run dual GTX980Ms. My desktop has one EVGA GTX580 CLASSIFIED. How much more performance can I get from one GTX980m? 2 GTX980ms?

current desktop is maxed out at i7-2600 16GB RAM
laptop will be i7-4820K 16GB RAM (upgradible to i7-4960X and 32 GB

Honestly you be better off upgrading your desktop gpu as opposed to getting an expensive SLI laptop. The part that doesn't get benched on laptop gpu reviews is the heat throttling unless you add on a good notebook cooler, but if you just tossed in one or two 290/290X/970/980 you'd be way better off. If you travel a lot, then yeah, gaming laptop makes a lot of sense, but if you're primarily doing stuff at home and/or gaming then the money you spend on a laptop can be spent on upgrading your desktop to be much more powerful than what you'll get out of a maxed out laptop with mobile gpu(s).

Agreed, just traded my mother in law her old desktop with a 3770k and 650 for a gaming laptop with an 860m and the difference is night and day, gaming laptops do not compare but her job is traveling all the time so she needed a mobile gaming machine.

I travel a lot, so I get a gaming laptop about every 2 years or so, but I keep it around $2,000 on average (for the last 14 years or so). I pour the majority of my hardware funds towards my desktop.
