Hello,
I have an idea for an app and I don't know how to start and how to protect my idea. Should protecting my idea be a concern, or am I getting ahead of myself? I really need some direction, can anyone help with this?

No, that's definitely the right order to approach things.
If you do a quick search, you'll find there's heaps of freelance developers who'll make what you want. This is the problem: They all want a significant cut of the profits. Most operate taking a percentage of the profits. I haven't yet heard of one-off jobs where they hand full control over to you. You'll have to look around.

As a secondary point, if you've got a really good idea it may be worth making a cross-platform app (i.e. coding with Android/iPhone/Win8M in mind, then making versions for each platform).

Here's two links I thought were promising:
http://www.developer4lease.com/mobile-development/android-development/ (this could be pricy)
http://www.globalemployees.com/hire-iphone-developer-india.html (this could be shifty)

Let me know your luck :D
