I have an HP dm4-2165dx. My hdd failed and I replaced it and used the HP factory recovery disks. The video cable had a short in it near the hinge. After I put it back together and turned it on, I heard an electrical "pop" near the top of the keyboard. The display only shows a grey/black screen. It does light up white on the backside. My tv monitor works totally fine.

I already replaced the video cable and tried a new screen. I have done system recovery several times. Memory and hardware diagnostics check out fine. Same problem. I disconnected the lcd inverter and no change on the display. I don't know if the "pop" is related to the problem or not. Could it be the inverter? Is there a replaceable video card? Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like the display on the laptop failed. If you replaced the screen and the video cable, than the short may have affected the MB. In most cases, there is not a user replaceable video card, and it would be the entire MB.
