Does not hold a charge

Charge it useing it for 10 mins then it turns off,when do I know when I need to buy a new lap top it's 7 years old or us a deck top better Thanks Laura G

If the laptop has a replaceable battery, just get a new battery. They do eventually quit charging as they get old.
