Dumb TV and USB Wifi Dongle

I have an old LG "dumb" TV. I use external usb hard drives to watch movies. I recently purchased a TP-Link VR600v which has a inbuilt media server that I can plug my usb hard drives into instead of the TV itself. I use this setup on my new "Smart TV" via it's inbuilt Wifi.

My question is can I plug a cheap wifi dongle into the old "Dumb" TV and still use the inbuilt media control to access the hard drives connected to the modem / router.

I don't want to access the internet, I just want to be able to watch movies from the hard drives.

just get a 2nd gen FireTV Stick on the cheap and you can use that.
Can side load Kodi app and use that to connect to media center.

Certified Refurbished for $25

or if you don't want to try your hand at refurbished, can get 2nd gen new for $40

Or you can try your hand on the used market in the off chance someone is selling because they upgraded to a newer 4K capable model or something.
