Yeah do not blame the massacres. It is not their fault people make games.

If massacres caused video games they would still be pretty awful things.
Unless it was, say, WC3, and it were caused by a horrific massacre of tapeworms.

I dont get the connection. Video games are to blame for the shooting? I thought he did all of this because he is anti muslim?

CoD didnt create that body count, the intense anti violence conditioning the campers had been taught since grade school did. It was 75 on 1, and the 1 won.

"Blaming Games on Massacres"
Yeah, every time I commit a major massacre... I'm always inspired to code a new game.
Who the hell is the editor around here?

I think if you want to try and analyze video games and violence, it'd be most appropriate to study South Korea. I believe S. Korea has a larger gaming population per capita then the US.

1500 page manifesto? That make the Unabomber look like an amateur by comparison.

It looks like the US no longer has the Crazy Mad Bomber market cornered.

Its kind of like old people who complain about new fangled technology. I'm sure some of you had a Grandpa or Great Grandpa who said that TV was gonna Rot your brain! They probably had the same thing themselves with the "new tech" Radio, and so on back into the stone age. :p

I was waiting for any type of statistic to confirm his theory that games have nothing to do with violent crime. Instead he gave an opinion.

He did bring up one good point, with 95% of the population of men playing video games, it's hard to make any study on the subject.

And you have to ask the proverbial question; did the violent behavior come before playing violent games, or did the violent games manifest itself into violent behavior?

I really doubt video games caused the violence.

The Norwegian guy used CoD to train how to shoot. What game did he use to train how to write 1500 page manifestos? I certainly would buy this game immediately!

Nice punchline.. er, headline. Why the hell would anyone think games lead to terrorism? Are the caves of Afghanistan full of muslims playing MW2?

... "you humans are all RACIST!" :D

Seriously, blaming video games on changing people's behaviour has got to be one of the most silly things that the "experts" ever came up with. I never took these "experts" seriously, anyway, and this just makes me despise them.

I have played every "violent" game out there, and I played them waaaay before I was old enough to do so, according to silly American ratings (luckily, not all the countries are stupid enough to follow these garbage ratings), and there's no way they'll make me commit a murder... they're just games! I may enjoy massacring enemies in CS, CoD, Crysis or ME2 - violent, satisfying warfare! - but it's just a GAME! It cannot suddenly brainwash me to go and shoot people... why would I do that? Remember, there won't be a respawn for you and you can't "lose the heat" IRL. Besides, I don't see a point in shooting people in schools, colleges and youth camps... they're rarely guilty of anything that the shooters claim them to be.

I don't even know how to explain it anymore, but I believe that true gamers will understand me. You can shoot thousands virtual enemies or wipe out a star system with all inhabitants, but it has nothing to do with real life. People who accuse shooters of "training" by using video games most likely have never played any FPS themselves... how did this Oslo freak use MW2 for training? Did he at least consider that IRL, you DO get tired of running around with 2 assault rifles on your back, unlike in MW2? =)

First, it was the ignorant useless people like that advocate who kept confronting GTA series, then prudent fools who accused ME of being a perverted sex simulator (without even playing it first... I think that's enough to show them as morons) and now it's the shooters themselves who claim the games causing them to do stuff. "Oh, it's not my fault I massacred the school... the violent video game I played las week convinced me to, I swear!"

Wait, he said he *trained* in MW2... so let's blame ALL environments where bad people can train for doing bad things. I suggest closing down all the malls (you can plan your massacre path while you shop), removing all games/movies from the market (they teach you that you can attack opponents) and introducing a martial law, because you can use pretty much every public place to plan something bad.

If you cannot control what a media - a movie, a game or a book - does to you, you belong in the asylum. Don't blame the media, blame yourself.

I'm sure some of you had a Grandpa or Great Grandpa who said that TV was gonna Rot your brain!

TV DOES rot your brain, just FYI. And before you say that I'm being as silly as the people who blame violence on video games, let me tell you: TV rots your brain only if you allow it; but since 90% of the TV content doesn't carry any other purpose, I don't see a point in owning a TV. My house doesn't have a TV connection and never will, as long as I can help it. When I'll get the TV, I'll connect it to my PC to watch movies and play games on it, nothing more. If you waste your time on watching news and political debates on TV, I feel sorry for you.

I agree with you in general, Zingam. This is not to say that racism does not exist: even in today's world, racism is all too common an occurrence. But the word is inappropriately invoked with such frequency that any casual description of a person or cause or belief as racist should immediately elicit a modicum of suspicion.

As for video games and violence, bystander brings up a good point--the issue of correlation versus causation. Do bloody video games promote violent tendencies, or are people with violent tendencies predisposed to playing similarly violent video games? This question is not easily answered (at least by me), but it does presume the existence of some real correlation between violent video games and acts of violence. Anecdotal evidence aside, I am unsure whether this presumption is well-founded. I'd be interested in hearing some actual statistics, but in the interim, I don't see that there is any intelligent discussion to be had.

And someone really ought to fix that title . . .

I am not a clinical psychologist. Yet, I have come to various conclusions:

Cause-No Affect
- I have played CODMW2...but haven't gone on a killing spree.
- I watched Lord of the Rings....but never obsessed and searched for a ring.
- I watched Jersey Shore...but never wore Ed Hardy shirts.

Cause-Affect
- I played Road Rash as a teen...bought a sport bike at 19.
- I watched a porn...and tried to do dirty things to my girlfriend.
- I saw a commercial for a Chia Pet...and bought it.

So after decades of research and experience, my findings support and debunk all theories. Maybe the real answer is some people just have a few screws loose. Maybe some people aren't loved. Maybe some people just cannot be figured out.
