[citation][nom]jecht[/nom]Well, it's easier to bring out the anger and paranoia in people than I thought. It's almost Pavlovian: mention the FCC or RIAA and immediately you get "FUCK YOU" and "big brother" everywhere. Screw what the article actually says.Yeah, that really sounds like the government trying to take control of our lives. /sarcasmSeriously, this isn't even anything. They're basically saying, "Parental controls aren't very good. Maybe we should lend parents a hand and make some that work right."And yes, it is the parents' responsibility to raise their children. Parental controls are just one means of assisting them to do so.[/citation]
Well, it was refreshing to see a sensible and focused post for once. Thank you.
I have to disagree with your stance however. I think what most people find objectionable about the information in the article is the fact that the government is trying to head the organization vs appointing a 3rd party (say, the MPAA or ESA). People hear about the censorship ordeals that occur in Germany and Australia which in turn will provoke a negative stance towards government censorship initiatives...I can sympathize.
Ultimately, at the top of the agenda is the difficulty parents are having with raising children. I strongly believe that enforcing involuntary control over a child is a poor way to lead and guide a developing mind. If a child wants to do something bad enough, most of the time they will find a way to do it. I won't go into parenting 101 but the thought I will leave you with is to consider this. Other countries with less controls in place for smoking, drinking, sex, etc tend to have less problems with the discipline of their youth. Perhaps there is something more to disciplining youth than overbearing control?
