If the FCC takes away the porn, I see the fail of the internet.

But honestly we DON'T need help from the gov't to prevent kids from looking at porn or violence. To prevent this put the damn computer in a room where someone is always around.

Again FCC FUCK OFF!

Right FCC, you fail. If you block sex or violence, then that means some companies perhaps can make crappy movies and don't get some profit.

FCC = bad move, FAIL.

I like how Democratic politicians are in favor of pushing this as fast as possible. Doesn't surprise me that they want to infringe on a couple more of our freedoms. Just one step closer to

*closer to communism. I would have removed my old comment if I could have, but I can't, so I'll have to settle for this stupid second post to correct the last one.

Sex and violence are a part of life and sheltering our children from it only ill prepares them for life. Unsuitable material, where do they get off telling me what I should think is suitable, how are they supposed to say sex is unsuitable when they allow a dick pill commercial to be aired every 3 minutes.

[citation][nom]jecht[/nom]Well, it's easier to bring out the anger and paranoia in people than I thought. It's almost Pavlovian: mention the FCC or RIAA and immediately you get "FUCK YOU" and "big brother" everywhere. Screw what the article actually says.Yeah, that really sounds like the government trying to take control of our lives. /sarcasmSeriously, this isn't even anything. They're basically saying, "Parental controls aren't very good. Maybe we should lend parents a hand and make some that work right."And yes, it is the parents' responsibility to raise their children. Parental controls are just one means of assisting them to do so.[/citation]
Well, it was refreshing to see a sensible and focused post for once. Thank you.

I have to disagree with your stance however. I think what most people find objectionable about the information in the article is the fact that the government is trying to head the organization vs appointing a 3rd party (say, the MPAA or ESA). People hear about the censorship ordeals that occur in Germany and Australia which in turn will provoke a negative stance towards government censorship initiatives...I can sympathize.

Ultimately, at the top of the agenda is the difficulty parents are having with raising children. I strongly believe that enforcing involuntary control over a child is a poor way to lead and guide a developing mind. If a child wants to do something bad enough, most of the time they will find a way to do it. I won't go into parenting 101 but the thought I will leave you with is to consider this. Other countries with less controls in place for smoking, drinking, sex, etc tend to have less problems with the discipline of their youth. Perhaps there is something more to disciplining youth than overbearing control?

You are so right…
Every day it seems I read at least one article where everyone says “the parents should be monitoring their children” Well… Umm… Parental controls are a good thing. I don’t use them and they don’t bother me. If I wanted to block shit from my kid at least I could… This is the only good thing the FCC does!

At the end of the day this is just a tool for parents...

This is just another step of administration for more power. Do you really think they care about "parental control". Politics are all about power and politicians have been hungry to take control/tax over the internet for some time now. You’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise. Also keep in mind they want to pass a bill for the president to have emergency power over the internet. WTF does is that mean? Lastly regarding parental control it’s the parents duty not F-ing FCC

I agree. I don't think a lot of people on this site have children and don't understand what it's really like to be a parent these days. You can be the best parent in the world, but you CANNOT monitor your child's activity 24/7. So any tools such as parental controls are a good thing in my opinion. My daughter gets a moderate amount of TV/computer time and she's at an age where I trust that she is viewing appropriate content because she has been taught what she should and shouldn't be viewing. At the same time, I do have parental controls on the computer because I don't what her (for example) googling High School Musical characters and getting a bunch of links for naked pictures.

Simply because others disagree with you doesn't mean they don't have children.

You seem to be under the impression that people want to remove parental controls, they do not. Parental controls are already provided in virtually all devices with few exceptions. People's objection to the article is based on the government's interest in creating a new 'rating' system vs utilizing existing ones.

On another note why do so many people care if their child sees a boob every once in a while? WTH? I don't think that boobs will currupt a child's mind or cause any harm. Parents should be far more concerned with violence than with penises. Besides, what's so wrong with a child knowing that babies don't come from storks after all?

I'm not implying they don't have kids because they disagree with me, I'm implying that because one of the most common comments is "parents need to do monitor what their kids do" or something along those lines. The thing is, it's not that simple. Yes, you need to monitor what your kids do, but you also need to show some trust and give them their own space when you feel they have earned it. I wish I could be with my daughter 24/7 and know everything she does, but I can't and it wouldn't be healthy for either of us if I did.

And yes, some of the comments are addressing the problem with government involvement; which I agree with. I am talking about all the other "just watch what your kids are doing" comments.
