All the government needs to do is claim that the new process can spot the newest or the last threat. -- Allegedly (According to the Disc. Channel special) the Underwear bomber would have been discovered via BS-XRay. Suddenly we're giving away our privacy for apparent security.

Though - the Underwear Bomber failed due to normal defenses, of an alert public & flight crew. -- And would have failed anyway, according to the tests done by the experts.

Oh -- and what are the long term health effects of BackScatter X-Rays? How do they compare for example to the X-Rays used in the Shoe Stores of the 50's ?

[citation][nom]technogiant[/nom]Who in their right mind did not think these would be kept? If a plane blew up mid atlantic do you not think they would want to refer back to these images of the passengers boarding the flight?Grow up this is the real world and its a dangerous place.[/citation]

Got news for you the world has ALWAYS been a dangerous place. To use that as an excuse to even remotely violate the rights and protections of a people is just seems down right wrong. Mankind as gone through a lot worse times and that is why we have the rights and protections we have today.

I prefer to let a few plane go down in flame then that.

Fear not, we will protect them. To arms, citizens!

Dogs would make a much better scanner than these things would, and much less invasive. Here's a thought too, use profiling to search the correct people. An 85 year old in a wheelchair is much less likely to carry explosives onto an airplane than a 18 - 35 year old male born in the middle east.

What a bunch of weak willed fags....there is actually a war being wagged..a war against terror....some of your fellow country men are laying down their lives for that war to protect you....you moan about your privacy, liberty and rights...they are giving up their "right to life" in this battle and you moan about this!!! pathetic...a war has consequences for everyone so just toughen up.

From someone who fought in those wars, I disagree. There should be a reason for me or anyone else to be taking up arms and laying our lives. That reason is to protect your rights or we just become a war mongering fascist state.

+1 to you, my kind sir.

[citation][nom]matt314[/nom]Thats why I love being Canadian![/citation]

Ummm... you do know we have these in Canadian airports too right?

I respect your view Warez...but you of all people must realize that freedom is not free and in war everyone has to make sacrafices in many ways for the overall greater good, even if those sacrafices involve suspension of what may in other more peaceful times be classed as rights....what about conscription during WW2....fight or go to jail...there is no freedom of choice there....but it was accepted for the greater good to overcome a greater evil.

I think Hitler won ...and there is no freedom we are all slaves just don't notice it, too much things to worry about.

I think the big brother is watching fanatics are taking this a little 2 far. First off, the only thing I can see this doing is being a little embarrasing for people who are overweight or have a small weenie. My feeling about storing them is that if you are going through all this trouble to take the x-ray, wouldn't you want it as a record in case something happened? Do you honestly think guys will be wacking it to an xray?

My only concern with this xray machine is that it is alot of money and will cause quite a bit of a delay through the security lines. I would not be happy if the government spent all this money and the terrorists easily found a way around it (which they probably will). When they showed this thing on tv, they tried to do an experiment with the same stuff the guy that was flying around thanksgiving/christmans lit himself on fire with, but they used some other ingredients that were radio opaque. Anyhow, The privacy thing doesn't really bother me as much as wether or not this is even beneficial to us.

@chomlee the issue is basic privacy. Its still strip searching that costs too much money per machine. I'm sure there's a bored TSA employee looking at these images and jerking it. There could also be pedophiles working there getting off on looking at nude images of children, downloading them, and then posting them online.

The other issue is that this technology won't ever work. You would have to get every airport in the world to install these machines. The underwear bomber came into America from outside the country, as did the shoe bomber. Also, you know the next attempt will be the bomber smuggling the explosive up their ass, which this scanner would never see. However a dog would easily be able to detect that, and would cost a fraction of what one of these machines costs.

ITT: Tinfoil hats

As far as the physical privacy issue, the US is too uptight about nudity to begin with. I can understand the possibility of people who are underage being exploited, but they could always create a separate line for children using the old Xrays if that's a concern. This really doesn't seem any more pornographic than a poor 3d render though.
Regarding the violation of unreasonable searches, this is no less a violation than a normal Xray scan, only more accurate. The only people concerned about being scanned are people with something to hide.
People want shorter lines at the airport, this will give you shorter lines since there will be less false searches. People want safer flights, this will lessen the chance for terrorism.

sry this has to be the stupidest comment ever... i served in iraq in oif 0506 its still very much bs that they are doing this.

Where in the constitution does it say "the right to fly on a jumbo jet." This isn't freedom of flight, it's a commercial service hosted inside a government facility. If you don't like the rules of commercial flight or federal buildings, fly a Cesna or take the train. If they wanted they could strip, throw lime on, hit with a fire hose, shave and put you in an orange jumpsuit before boarding the plane.
