File transfers

what's the easiest way to xfer files between 2 computers in the same room. my neighbor said to set up tcp protocols or some such nonsense which makes no sense to me at all. shouldn't this be as simple as plugging in some sort of usb cable?i'm waiting for my new computer atm and plan on transfering files from my very old one that i'm replacing and my other heavy duty machine while i wait.

If both computers have Gigabit Ethernet, just plug in an Ethernet cable between them.

If they don't, get a Crossover Ethernet cable and plug them up.
