First Smartphone Reccomendations

I've been using a Samsung sliding "dumb phone" that's been through a lot. It's been lost in the dirt, dropped in the ocean, driven over, thrown, and it still works perfectly. However, I feel it's time to upgrade to a smartphone (I guess I'll have to be more careful now ). Notably, the phones that stick out are the iPhone 5s, Galaxy S4, and HTC One. I have friends that own all of these and I need some recommendations. I'm not a smartphone wiz so, if you have any suggestions on which one and why (or others that I don't know about), I would love to hear it! Thanks in advance!

P.S.: I have Verizon if that matters

If you like the ability to play around with your phone out of the box, get either the Samsung or HTC. If you want a bit smoother operation the iPhone has a bit better feel to the interface.
