Up to the current console generation, I've gone with the more is better route and pretty much owned every console from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and (*tear*) even Sega. Due to having a family of my own now and much less time though, I have yet to get into the PS4/XBONE/Switch Era - and in fact sold all my prior era stuff except for an old "Fat" PS3.
I'm now looking to get back into the console scene but probably only have time for one console (money isn't the issue, but kids take up a lot of time). The question is which to get for me, given my circumstance (below) and desires (also below). I appreciate the guidance of the community!!
Some considerations:
1. I really want the console to play racing/driving games, the infrequent arcade type title and some sports games - pick up and play for 15-20 minute things. I might get an FPS game from time to time or an action or strategy title, but most of those I'll play on my PC. This is really for those times when I want to pick up a controller for a few minutes while my kid's napping and I don't want to fire up the gaming PC.
2. VR experiences (PSVR) can be considered a plus, but a minor one - I have a mobile VR headset and if I want to go into it big, I'd get one of the PC headsets.
3. I'd be hooking this up to a 4k TV with HDR and I don't currently have a blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray player, though I don't use discs much.
4. I have an up to date gaming PC, so that's not one of the options. I intend to keep it up to date and also have a Steam Link to stream games to my TV if I want to get in a real "hardcore" gaming session.
5. I have a 3DS and both Android and iOS devices, so those also aren't what I'm looking for.
The biggest thing is #1 - what's the best of the consoles right now that I can turn on 1-2x a week for 15-20 minutes and enjoy a racing or quick game on without waiting for endless updates, patches, etc. I seldom use my PS3 because every time I turn it on and put a game in, it spends more time patching and updating than I even have to play it.
Or does it really just come down to if I prefer Forza vs Gran Turismo?
