Why is the chair on the 'ground' but the spaceman seems to be hovering in mid-(space?) while stepping onto it? I'm no physics major, but one would think that gravity holding the chair down would also be holding him/her down?

It's an optical illusion because the picture is taken at an angle. You can see the top of chairs seat, which you couldn't see if it were level with the camera. The camera appears to be at head height looking down.
