SUMMARY- I would like a Dell/Sony/Lenovo laptop which would run "GTA 4 on high settings". Also the laptop should be as light as possible(below 5 lb preferred)!!! I am willing to wait till july/august if any confirmed laptop releases are there during this summer 2010 meeting my requirements.

Before starting, my current laptop configuration is

dell inspiron 6400 17inches
Intel core 2 duo t7200 @2.00Ghz
chipset i945PM
1GB Ram DDR2
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 256MB
Windows XP

I need to upgrade my laptop...

1_What is your budget?

I can shell out $1500...can go overboard if the laptop is really worth cpl of hundred more!!!(maybe till $2000)

2_What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
It should be minimum 13 inches. But the main constraint is weight, as I would like to carry it around with me a lot.
13-16" would be fine

3_What screen resolution do you want?
Dont know...

4_Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
I need the laptop to be as light as possible (5 pounds or less would be ideal). It should be portable.

5_How much battery life do you need?
2-3 hrs without battery would be perfect! plus or minus is fine. I can always plug in

6_Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Yeah I need to play games.
Call of duty modern warfare(Series), Godfather, Grand Theft Auto series...all in high setting would be awesome

MAINLY GTA IV in High settings

7_What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, Etc.)
movies, browsing, editing sometimes using adobe premier or photoshop CS

8_How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need?
I have an external 1TB so 250GB HD would be enough

9_If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post the links to them.
Nothing specific. maybe bestbuy.com or amazon.com

10_How long do you want to keep your laptop?
Atleast 2 years.

11_What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
DVD drive would be sufficient. Blu ray maybe if it falls within budget

12_Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I would prefer dell as i am using one and am used to its shortcuts/key layout.
I would also prefer Sony.

13_What country do you live in?
USA
14_Please tell us any additional information if needed.

I prefer windows OS. no mac :non:

Wait for the m11x to come out. It's a gaming "netbook" coming from Alienware and should be out within two weeks to under 1,000. If it turns out to be true it should play GTA on Highish setting without AA.

However if you want the real deal to play on High/Ultra with AA on you're going to need to go bigger.

Something like..

Try that on for size. It'll for sure play it on High + wayyy more.

Me neither, nice catch on that Maz. Try looking at the G51Jx, as I think it is lighter than the m15x; but I'm not for sure.

Hey guys thanks for replies...

11 inches is fine with me....

but can M11x handle GTA IV in high settings?
GTA 4 recommends

Operating System: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 OR Windows XP Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz ?????
Memory/RAM: 2.5GB for Vista, 2.5GB for XP
Hard Disk Space: 18 GB Free
Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 or 512MB ATI 3870

core2Quad????

As i7/i5...GF100 are coming out so lets see if any light weight gaming laptops come around!!!! :sarcastic:

G51Jx seems to be a good one....

I am not particular on screen size...my main criteria is "weight"...Typically Less than 5 lbs....

You'll have to excuse me, I'm getting all my info from google as the m11x isn't out till later January. I see it's equipped with a 335m. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-335M.24060.0.html

Notebookcheck has put this in higher class 2. It should run most games including GTA4 on high with no AA. I could be under estimating this card though as it is built on a 40nm architecture and has room to OC the core which is stock 450. The 335m is insane for the size, that's no doubt. It isn't as good as the 360m gts though in the G51.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTS-360M.24058.0.html

You need to compare those two and decide which one is for you. Right now we know the m11x will be sub 12", and under 1000 dollars. It will no doubt be light because of it's size, so if weight is the main issue for you, you will want to wait for this to come out.

The g51jx is more powerful, but 400-500 dollars more. It will run GTA4 on high/very high, but it does weight around 9 pounds. You're really open to two options.

1. Sacrifice performance a little bit and get the lighter cheaper one.

2. Get the heavier one, pay 400 dollars more, but have quite a bit more performance.

The m11x comes with a core 2 duo, which is fine for gaming in this gen. Just a concern in the future.

Things to consider:

G51Jx

PROS:
*Better res that is FHD 1080p
*Considerably faster graphics card.
*i7 processor which should crush a core 2 duo multitasking but should be more par with gaming.
*Bigger overall screen

CONS:
*Heavier
*Costs more
*Isn't out yet

M11x

PROS:
*Decent graphics card, could play most all games on high no AA.
*Fairly lightweight for a gaming "Netbook".
*Small and compact.
*Cheaper than most gaming notebooks

CONS:
*Can't really use AA
*Graphics card can't use GDDR5 ram.
*Isn't even out yet.
*Low res

Consider these links:

To compare GPUS:

To compare CPUS:

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7+720QM+@+1.60GHz -- G51Jx

Overall reviews:

http://gizmodo.com/5442786/alienware-m11x-hands+on-fast-ride-in-a-short-machine -- M11x

http://www.hardware.info/en-US/productdb/bGpka5ibmJHKZcg/viewproduct/ASUS_G51JXSZ041V_G51JXSZ041V/ -- G51Jx Currently no reviews out on it.. Hopefully to see some soon. Check google daily, someone might have gotten a hands on at CES.

I hope this all helps you out some on the info that I know. :)

Thanks

Ya my main concern is weight!

M11x is said to be ard 4lbs :bounce:

I am waiting for it....Anyways I will be deciding only around late summer...Hopefully more powerful(i7) lighter(<5 lbs) laptops arrive by then :)

That could be a ways off, so keep that in mind. The i7 produces a lot of heat, so a larger fan would be needed, thus larger chassis, and that = more weight. Core 2 duos are powerful, manage heat well, and don't use much power. If you're waiting for a better processor probably the best you're going to get is i3 or i5 in that weight category...
