well I playing forza horizon 3 on high settings at unlocked frames per second and I only get an average fps of 35 max 40 min 30 and idk why. is it because of the 8gb ram ?
specs:
i5 7300hq
gtx 1050 ti 2gb
8gb
1tb hard drive
128gb ssd

Solution
You can use MSI Afterburner to see how Forza or any other game is being bottlenecked by your laptop. It can also be used to overclock the GPU; however, I do not recommend overclocking a laptop GPU because laptops have very limited cooling capabilities. Doing so can damage the GPU / laptop. You can download it the program in the following link:

Here is how to set up the program.

If the GTX 1050 Ti is near or at 100%, then that means your GPU is limiting your performance.

If RAM usage is nearly 8GB, then that means Windows, the game itself and any other programs you may have running are using all the available RAM...

Could try but I think it’s a function of the cpu and gpu more than anything.

That’s a laptop cpu and a fairly entry level gpu so shouldn’t expect much. I did read that setting 30fps limit in that game helps the feeling of smoothness.

From my experience extra RAM does not give higher average FPS or if it does it’s not noticeable. What not having enough RAM does in my experience is cause stuttering/freezing as things are cached to the HDD/SSD.

Monitor your gpu and all cpu cores useage while playing. Which is getting near 100%, gpu or some cpu cores? That will be your limiting factor.

Question from UK ENTERTAINER : "gaming difference on performance"

Yes, the i7 will be faster across the board when compared directly to the i5. The difference from a user perspective will vary dependent on the game/application and how CPU intensive it is. What is the price difference of what you are looking at?

For example: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700HQ-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7300HQ/m211019vsm223877

If RAM usage is nearly 8GB, then that means Windows, the game itself and any other programs you may have running are using all the available RAM which means there is likely some disk caching happening which can lower performance. Upgrading to 16GB of RAM can help, but typically it will only add a few FPS to the game if this is the case.

The i5-7300HQ is a 4 core CPU with no Hyper Threading (HT) capabilities. HT allows each core to process 2 sets of instructions instead of just 1. However, games / programs must be designed to take advantage of HT. Only Core i3 CPUs (dual cores) and Core i7 CPUs (both dual and quad cores) have HT. If MSI Afterburner is showing almost 100% CPU usage, then that means the CPU is limiting the game's performance. Also, keep in mind that many games have only been designed to use 2 cores so they will be limited to 50% CPU usage.

With regards to an i7-7700HQ which is a quad core CPU with Hyper Threading... If the game does not take advantage of HT, then the max CPU usage will be 50% (meaning 4 cores). Games that are designed to take full advantage of HT would show 100% CPU. Games that can make some use of HT would fall somewhere in between 50% and 100%. Games that can only use 2 core will show only 25% usage.

Solution
If you do not want to max out the GPU, then you will be decreasing FPS in games.

NVidia has a program called NVidia Profile Inspector which can be used to limit the FPS in games which can lower the GPU usage. The latest version is from 2016 though. I never used it myself. Setting a FPS limit of 50 in a game where at most you are only getting 40 FPS will not actually lower GPU usage.

The following video shows you how to limit the FPS.
