Solved! Good laptop cooler for Asus G50vt-X5?

I am currently using a Belden Laptop cooler and it doesn't seem to cool my G50vt-x5 that much. Using speed fans I get the following temperature:

GPU: 71-75C (idle) and 100-110C (gaming, SC2, Borderlands)
HD: Cool 41C
System Temp: 57-60C idle and 80C (gaming)
CPU: 55-60C idle and 80C+ (gaming)

Any recommendations? Are these temperature normal for a gaming laptop?

You can remove the bottom cover of the laptop and use your cooler if you don't lag around your computer that much.

Those USB powered fan are useless as it don't produce much air so I replaced the fan of my laptop cooler with the 12VDC PC case cooler and get a $5 transformer or an old phone charger to power it, now the fan makes more CFM of air flow than the old one. You should look in to that.

Ah ok thanks I will try that. Couple more questions...

1. How do you turn off the lights to the left and right of the laptop?
2. My GPU is really overheating to the point that when it reaches 110C I am unable to play anything. Everything just lags to hell lol. What should I do about this? Open up the laptop and check the thermal paste on the GPU/CPU?

I really have no idea, is it not in the manual? I only played with that model at the store, unfortunately I was just there yesterday and they don't have it on display anymore.

You may replace the thermal paste but it won't help much if you put the cover back on. Just open the bottom cover and place the laptop on top of the cooler, both turned on of course, :) that'll increases airflow and cooling your laptop faster as heat escape faster.

Desktop in general have more open space where heat will easily find its way out (with the help of fan/s of course). So you really can’t compare the two since size and cooling components are different.

Try checking on some reviews and compare the temperature they got to yours.

Any fan will not be enough to cool things if the heats regenerate faster than the fan could move the hot air. Most people never think about HD and wifi and other component generating heat in their system, if the heat stays longer in the system, the heat accumulates eventually increases your system temperature. Perfect example is the slow cooker. With the bottom cover off, I think you should be fine as long as you don't put your laptop on top of radiating heater. :)

hi, i figured i'd answer this thread because there are people that still have this laptop and are buying it at a reduced price.

this laptop's cpus get HOT; it has a poor cooling system. it doesnt have adequate thermal compound, but after replacing it on mine, i still have hot temps when playing games.

nothing you can buy will cool it off. i've spent 150 bucks buying all kinds of fans and mats. buying a clip on fan that sticks onto the vent doesnt do anything.

the temp does decrease with the bottom removed, and having external display, keyboard, etc [using it like a desktop] is the only
way to really use this computer. i would have the back case off and flip it over and let a fan hit the processors.
the benefit of this is i never really touched my laptop and after a few years it looks brand new still.

I was able to significantly reduce my laptop heat issues by doing the following (make sure you have Arctic Silver 5 handy (Radio Shack has it) (see this video from ClanCamp for more info http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwXNNm2SmS8)

1) Unplug, remove the battery, and then remove the back panel

2) Remove the tiny screws and take off the CPU fan and cooling unit

3) Unscrew the fan from the cooling unit

4) Clean off the dust that has collected on the fins (I used a pressured air duster and a q-tip)

5) Clean off the old thermal compound from the cpu, video chip, and cooling unit using a razor blade and q-tip

6) Add the new thermal compound (Arctic Silver 5) on the cup and video chip

7) Reconnect the fan to the cooling unit

8) Reconnect the cooling unit and fan to the cpu and graphic card

9) Replace the back panel

*Also, you might consider drilling some holes in the round black circular part of the back panel that covers that cpu area or following this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np6TsE54omc&feature=fvwrel

After doing all this my G50vt now hums, runs games and videos better, and does not overheat.

your gpu is definitely overheating, it should be under 90 celcius. I have the same laptop and every six months I open it up and blow all the dust out with a can of air.

Hey, I have this laptop and was having the same heat issues. I ended up taking off the bottom cover, removing the silver ring, removing the mesh and cutting out the circle beneath. I then got some wire mesh, like you would find on a window cover, and cut out a piece to fit around the circle over the lip where the silver ring sits. Then I used hot glue, making sure not to put to much so the ring could be put back into the holes that are there. My temps dropped from about 105 when gaming to 80 tops. Maybe something to consider if you think you're up to it.
