So... basically it's a contest not associated with Google by one of their employees who is apparently in Microsoft's pocket and trying to generate buzz about their next-gen EyeToy clone. Maybe as a PC device or interface device, Kinect can have interesting applications. But as a gaming device, it's going to be nothing but flailing your arms in dance games and other "party" games.

Imagine the possibilities. Who gives a damn who makes kinect or what was its initial purpose. Its a controller/input device. I'd love to see some serious adaptations on this one. This is going to be huge.

Yeah, pay someone else a mere 1k to do your hacking for you..... So you can get Google on Kinect.
For those poor at math: 3k= 3 multiplied by k. Where k is equal to 1000.
Further simplified; 3 x 1000= 3000.

it's open source, it's not like he sold it to anyone. It was simply a reward. Usually you don't get paid for writing open source code, so actually this was very generous.
