"At least Apple found a way to lure dumb people into technology. I'll give them that much."

I would not call the for-profit caged-web vision Apple envisions for its largely technologically illiterate fanbase "luring people into technology". Have been there done that.

230,000 activations makes sense... people ge tthe phone realise how terrible it is ccancel thier contracts and sell the phone on ebay or craigs list... then the person who buys it is technically a new activation

Reguardless of the numbers now, Android will far surpass the number of iOS. The reason I believe this, is iOS is only available for the iphone and ipads. Adroid is available to multiple companies, multiple phones and multiple tablets.
If you compare how long adroid has been available compared to the iphone os, and Adroid has fairly similar activations, than to me adroid will continue its rise and far surpass apple leaving them in the dust. Just how Microsoft did too Apple for the computers. It will be interesting to see where these numbers fall when MS release its new OS for phones. I am aslo curious to see if Windows 7 Mobile will be the new OS for netbooks and some tablets....
Time will tell

I wonder how many of Apple's activations include people reactivating their old Iphone since the new phone's have even worse reception?

While I appreciate the ability to have an open system, Android is looking less and less appealing to me. Because of different system configurations, it appears that over time, not all of the android apps will not function the same on all android phones, much like computers... I am not sure that is something I want to deal with in a mobile phone. I think I am going to stick with my feature-phone for a long long time.

I'm not sure it's just the variation that bothers me, more the lack of compatability. Sure Android is a Linux variant but that doesn't mean it can run Windows software the same way a desktop Linux distro can (WINE, etc) so if I buy a Froyo tablet why not install printer drivers, image software, MS Office - admittedly this article is about phones but seeing as the OS is both phone and tablet they are neglecting some very fundamental wants of tablet users who want to run some desktop programs but dont want Windows.
Give them what they want and you could kill Microsoft.
Dont and they will be forced to keep buying Windows.
In that respect they are making the same mistakes as Apple but dont have an expensive hardware lineup to pad out the bottom line.
