[citation][nom]__Miguel_[/nom]Agreed, but it would need an IR front-facing camera, or at least an IR-emitter (which shouldn't be too difficult, actually), because standard smartphone cameras are usually VERY bad dealing with low-light scenarios. And you'd probably need special camera software to deal with the IR lighting properly, which might be a time-consumer effort. Now, another thing that crossed my mind: how exactly are those glasses going to be powered? ARM is low-power, but you still need batteries... And the prospect of lugging around heavy batteries on my ears is not really a good one. Maybe a tiny generator, like some watches have, to keep the battery size small?[/citation]

Probably just a wire to a battery pack.

X-ray vision will come built in with the sunglasses you keep in your flying car...

I'd have to try them out, but if they worked well I could see paying ~$200 for them. If they were transparent, used both lenses and had 3D support then I'd probably pay ~$400 for them. Do want.

I submitted something very like this to Google's Project 10 to the 100 (http://www.google.com/onceuponatime/project10tothe100/) contest a few years ago... my idea was close-captioning eyewear so that hearing impaired people, and people not speaking the same language could communicate. The same basic hardware layout as I suggested, but more on the audio-side than visual... I stipulated a directional mic mounted on the glasses, and the smartphone doing speech-to-text translation (including potentially routing through a translation service) to display on the HUD... Then last year, Sony announced my exact idea, but in the context of movie-theaters, with a bit of fluff about my original intended purpose...

Sure would be nice to get these made for the purpose I designed them for -- improving the quality of life for people with disabilities... as it stands (with Sony and Google in the mix), the patent trolls will have all of the tech so locked up that nobody can do anything with it...

Google -- I want my submission back!!!

[citation][nom]Chipi[/nom]Sorry, but I call "bull" on this one.The human eye can't focus on objects that are extremely close. Try to hold your phone up close, like it was the lens of these "HUD Glasses". Can't see anything can you? Depending on how good one's vision is, around 10 to 20cms of distance are needed between the eye and the object/display. Otherwise the image will just be a blur. Not to mention the fact that viewing objects at a close range requires your ciliary muscles to contract. Doing this for a prolonged time is obviously not comfortable.[/citation]
ah heck...someone better tell those Apache pilots their head mounted displays wont work. And those wearable displays wont work either ;)
