I have my laptop hooked up the my TV as a monitor through HDMI, the audio runs from the laptop to the surround sound sound system via an optical cable. I can only get the option for 2 channels for the audio. Though if I use the Logitech G930 headphones the 7.1 sound works fine. In the properties for the digital audio there is a test for Dolby and when running the test it uses all the speakers, not just the front 2, so I know it is possible to setup more the 2 channels so games and Netflix will use the surround sound functions, I just can't figure out how to set it up so.

Ah, too bad you don't have windows 10. The Netflix app fully supports 5.1 surround last I checked. However, browsers don't have 7.1/5.1 surround sound support.

But games do. And I would love to figure out how to make it work with them.

In most cases, optical audio carries stereo not surround sound signals.

But if you test it in properties, and test dolby, it does all 5.1 speakers. So I know its possible, just can't figure out how make it work with everyting like that.
