I'm building a skylake gaming computer, and my budget is somewhat limited. As it stands, I can either buy one 960 now and then another in a few weeks to a month and SLI them, or wait a month or more to be able to buy a 970/390. At the moment I'm very much leaning towards the SLI setup, as I wont have to spend a month with no card and unable to play anything. from the considerable amount of research I've done dual 960's will also outperform a 970 in almost every scenario except for at 4k and with games that utilize a lot of ram, so to me that justifies the extra trouble of an SLI setup. I have a nice roomy case with great ventilation and extra fans, as well as a 750W gold + PSU, so power draw and thermal output shouldnt be much of an issue.

Suck it up and wait for the GTX 970 or the 390, black Friday is coming you may get an awesome deal. Perhaps a friend has and old card you can barrow in the mean time.

I would wait for a GTX 970 or look into buying a used one from forums or e-bay or Craig's List. Even at 1080p video ram matters and will matter more as time goes on. I assume you want the system to last more than a year. I can also tell you that sli 970's are technically faster than a 980 ti but the experience on a 980 ti is more consistent and has better minimums. It is always better to get the more powerful card.
