Hacked Android Not Yet Activated

How could my non-activated, reconditioned, android have gotten hacked when I have no idea of the password for any of the Wi-Fi networks that show in the area?

Just to clarify, what indications did you see that made you think it was hacked? Do you have a wi-fi router in your home and is that one not shown on the available list?
