Hanged laptop while starting

how to shut down or restart hang laptop

Can you just hold down the power button until it powers off? Or unplug the laptop and take out the battery?

I did a hard shutdown (hold power button for 5 sec) once on mine Acer 6930 laptop cause it hanged in Windows Vista, and the HDD died right away... So I can't really recommend on doing a hard shutdown on a laptop after my pretty bad experience... Still you have to do it if it doesn't respond anymore.
