I am getting ready to replace the hard drive in my laptop. It came with windows 7. I do no have the recovery disks. Can I just buy windows 10?

Solution

You have 2 ways of doing this:

1. Upgrade to Win 10 now, and then a clean install of Win 10 on the new drive when you get it

2. Discover your existing Win 7 license key. Clean install of Win 10 on the new drive when you get it, activating with your Win 7 license.

Assuming, of course, your system can run Win 10. It probably can.
Check to see if your laptop manufacture even offers drivers for Windows 10 for your laptop. If it came with Windows 7, they probably don't even support Windows 10.

doesn't show windows 7 listed there.

USAFRet, don't need to use win7 key doing a fresh install of win 10 after doing upgrade as now registered because of the upgrade.

Right. But I read in his initial statement that it was still on Win 7.
If it has been Upgraded to 10 already, just install on the new drive, and it will activate.
