hard drive utility?

my 5080 is acting very strange as of late and i'm wondering if the HD isn't
going bad. are there any utilities out there to somehow run and see if it's
going bad or not?

when i change channels, say choosing 124, it will change to 12 or 4 or
something weird. also, when i taped 24 the other night, and replayed it,
there were "hiccups" in the sound throughout the entire recording. never
happened before.

Sounds like a bad HD, however.... I'd be interested in the answer to

I have one Replay (the other 2 are still working) that has lost some
shows, and corrupted some Replay channels. It may need a new HD too.
Looks like I didn't save anything by not upgrading it.

Those old series Maxtors w/o fdb just don't last in PVRs. I have never
had a drive failure in 5K. I don't have them more than a month or so
before I upgrade the drive.

Last time I upgraded (and I'm about to do it again) I used a Western
Digital drive model number WD1200B. This is a 120MB drive.

Supposedly, the 5400 RPM Maxtor QuickView drives are made specifically
for PVR applications. I upgraded my 5040 with a 160 gig QuickView drive
about eight months ago, and haven't had any problems with it (though
there are plenty of successful upgrades using other drives as well).

FWIW, their benefits are claimed to be:

* Thermal Control: On board sensors monitor temperature and adjust
characteristics as necessary to keep the temperature optimal.
* Acoustic Management: Maxtor QuickView drives are specially tuned
to run as quietly as possible.
* A/V Streaming: QuickView drives have been optimized and tuned to
provide consistent data to the PVR processor. Standard desktop drives
can hang while retrying drive reads - QuickView drives know to move
ahead and provide more data to keep video smooth.
* Error Recovery: Desktop drives retry on errors to make sure that
your Excel spreadsheet is exactly right - it's imperative. But when
watching video, if one block of data is bad, you may not even notice a
dark spot on one frame for 1/30th of a second. So these drives are tuned
to move past errors faster, putting the stream of data as top priority.
Where desktop drives often cause stutters, these drives run smooth.

I just popped the upgrade drive into my 5040 (it's not a 5200 using the
same numbering standard) and... All I can say it it appears to be very
happy, In fact, I appear to be very happy too.

In my case I used a pre-formatted drive so I had to run through setup
again, but since it's still set up in "Training mode" I did not have to
offload shows. (Just deleted them, all but one was on Video tape, it's
on another hard drive) Next week it goes "live"

Wife really liked the way I "ran downstairs" for the show I recorded on
My Replay so she could watch it (He, He, cursor up a few times. right
once and back down, you there)

Right. Sorry about the error. I get used to the way things used to be,
when 120MB was rilly big.

Each hour of recording uses less than 1GB. For that drive, the
capacity would be about 136 hours.

Right. I sometimes make that mistake because of using computers when
really large capacities were measured in MB.

Approximately 1 hr per GB. For a 120GB drive, it's about 123 hours.

is there any size limit to how big of a hard drive you can put into a 5080?
are there any CONS to say putting a 200GB drive into one?

I found a site (i'm not at home just now so do not have the URL) which
not only told HOW to do the upgrade but showed pictures.

I can give you the physical description of the replacement of the HD if
you like, that is very easy 20 bolts and one cable tie 2 connectors and
you are done (Bolt count is an estimate) only hard part is putting the
cover back on the replay.

RTV patch is well documented so that should not be a problem

Strange you should mention a 200 Gig HD, that's what I put in my 5040

The only con is this... Should it fail.. You loose more content than if
you had a 40 Gigger. The positive is it holds more content

But I can tell you how the upgrade went..... Without a hitch.

I hope not, I put a 5400RPM 250GB Maxtor into one of my 4504's over a
year ago <grin>. I hven't found a really good price on another 5400RPM
250GB yet, and the 40GB is enough for my overflow and the second 4504
(well that and DVA running on another 250GB 7200RPM 8MB cache drive
running XP help keep space available for new content).

I'm confused. The only software used at the web page above is RTVPatch.
Other posts indicate a need to download and use a 200+ MB file. What's
the big file for? Is it used if there is not an original disk to copy?

I have a 5040 that I would like to upgrade this weekend. The method
illustrated above seems simple enough.

Yes. That other file is a copy of the Replay software. You need it if
you don't have a good Replay disk to copy it from. If you're just
upgrading (have a good Replay disk), you can use that and don't need
the additional file.

Using that file would probably require you to download the current
Replay software again (about 2 hours with a POTS connection).

If you need it, you should be able to download a Replay image from
http/rgb.cc/replaytv/images/replay/
