Hardly any sound on Sony Vaio laptop

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEA3C5E laptop which has Realtek High Definition Audio. My problem is that the sound is very low even though I have it set at 100%. I have tried updating the Audio driver but it had no effect, in fact if anything it made it worse. Is there anything I can try to increase the sound to a level where it can actually be heard?
