Haswell i5 vs Ivy i7

Solution
If they are running the same speed there will be almost no diffrence HT on the i7 gives you about 10 to 15 % more speed and the haswell i5 will get about a 10% boost in per thread performance over Ivy so I am betting you would not even notice the diffrence.

Oh in that cas i7 for sure it will be way faster. This is with a buuuuuut you will get waaay better batterylife with the haswell this was one main focus with the new gen we are talk like an hour or 2 more battery so if this is for school use this might be a big deal to you.

Hmm I think I'm leaning towards the i7. On tests, they both last about 5-6 hours and both have the rapid charge technology so I don't think that would be a problem. So I should get the i7 right?

insuffient data:
1) i5 Hazwell - 4 core/4threads vs i7 IB w/4cores/8threads
i7 will only be better if you Do heavy mutitasking and if software can take advantage of extra cores. ie I have a laptop i5-2410m - w/ excell, word, brosser, and watching a blur-ray dvd opened- do not see performance degragation in performance compared to an i7.
... Bottom line is unless you use a specific App(s) that take advantage of multiple threads, not an issue.

2) Are you getting a laptop with a dedicated GPU. Both IB and Hazwell have an iGPU - the Hazwell iGPU has a MUCH better iGPU. Are you planing on games, if so probably want to consider a dGPU.

3) 4-5 hrs for a i7 (SB or IB), ya right! My i5-3410M just makes it thru a DVD (on Plane) with a little to spare. Derate advertized battery time by 25-50% depending on usage. Also a function of dGPU and screen size. Hazwell does improve on battery time - just don't know the "REAL" life deregulation - ut should defintely be better than the i7 IB.

4) While not a biggy (unless heavy multitasking) interms of i5/i7 performance, REMEMBER the MB/CPU features are improved for Haswell (also dependent on laptop model ie haswell allows for INPUT HDMI (IB does not) but if laptop does not provide the input port then NO use.

Bottom line, unless you know that you will be taking advantage of the extra Threads (Both are 4 cores), the i5 Hazwell would be a better choice.

Of the two - the Sony, Reason:
.. Ram, Looks the same, but the leveno does not specify if ram is 1x4 or 2 x 2 (probably the 2 x 2). The sony is 1 x 4 which means you can go to 8 gig by buying just 1 4gig module (need to match the specs of the one installed.
.. iGPU, since neither have a dGPU HD4400 > HD4000
.. Screen - Sony way better @ 1920 x 1080 (2,073,600 pixels) vs 1600 x 900 1,440,000 pixels). This means that the sony has almost 50% greater pixel density Biggy (smaller but clearer text, higher resolution for graphics
.. 2 x USB3 vs 1 x USB3 + 1 USB2
Wieght, Sony almost a pound lighter.

.. Neg for sony - SSD is only half the size. But generally a 128 is OK for a OS + Program drive. On all My systems win7 + programs take about 35 Gigs. That would still leave about 60 gigs for your files/data. This can be agumented with a 64 gig USB3 thumbdrive.
.. Only 4 core/4 thread vs 4 core/ 8 threads, Already explained - may, or ma not be a true negative depending on usage.

Added: On screen resolution.
.. The sony screen is a much better/more expensive screen.
.. Little more on resolution:
--- Leveno: PPI = 138.03 / Dot pitch = 0.184
--- Sony : PPI = 165.63 / Dot pitch = 0.153
---- Ref for PixelsPerInch: http://thirdculture.com/joel/shumi/computer/hardware/ppicalc.html

Thank you very much! The yoga has 1x4 and can be upgradable but the sony cannot since it's soldered. Are there any other laptops you can suggest around the same price point? It doesn't have to be an ultrabook.

Reference the sony.
Sometimes in laptops they "solder-in" one Ram module. This does not allways mean that ram can not be upgraded using a 2nd Ram slot. Would need to check that out. Often it would be included in the Manual. Normally before buying a Laptop, I download the manual and read it - All to often it is much better thn just reading the specs.

The macbook is good, although I would never Buy. Generally mac's tend to be very specific (Proprietary) in add ons, ie I have a ipad1 tablet - Bought the Asus tablet for this reason.
