Interesting article. About five years after I did the same thing using a Western Digital EX4100 NAS. Both our 2018 model Samsung TV and 2023 TCL Roku TV will let me choose the WD as my media source. I don't know if it's WD or Plex, but when I try to use Plex Media Server it show all the files even when I select the Videos>Movies folder.

That story took an unexpected turn with the files getting locked! I do appreciate you sharing that part of the journey though. We've all had those "will never happen to me" moments.

Nice, would have used just simple VLC Player as media server can access on network and simpler.
Should check out JJMediaHub - they sell Google and Android TV units with custom streaming server apps with loads of content.
simple and easy.
