have several mini-DV tapes that my camcorder and therefore the connected computer don't read. They are not blanks, as I label

Can anything be done to allow me to recover these tapes for posterity, and if I can't can the commercial places do it? thanks much

If you're talking about ancient miniDV tapes, chances are they were not stored properly and have lost their data, especially if the camcorder reading the tapes where the same ones writing the tapes. If you are actually talking about Digital8, the original data may have been Hi-8 and that would explain the inability to read.

Few commercial recovery places remain for DV, and chances are it will be very expensive and very little will be recovered.
