HDD Question

I dropped my computer the other day and I am going to replace the HDD since its the worrying me. Could I simply order a new HDD (same size just more storage and bigger cache) , unplug the old one (take out the SATA cable and power cable), and plug in the new one.
 
Yes, you can. Of course, the data stored on the old drive won't magically appear on the new drive. If it's just data (images, videos, MP3s. documents, Steam download folder, etc...) you can just copy that over to the new drive. Any programs that were installed (Windows OS, Firefox/Chrome Browser, Office applications, etc...) will need to be reinstalled.

Will the system know how much power to send to the HDD so I don't fry my system
