So I recently bought a 3 In/1 Out HDMI switch online (fairly cheap admittedly) thinking it would be the answer to my problem of having to switch a HDMI cable back and forth between my PS3 and PC in order to display it on my monitor.
Now the only problem is that I don't think the switch gets enough power if it's connected to the PC alone. Why I say this is because it works fine if I connect just the PS3 to the switch or if I have both connected and the PS3 is on. If the PS3 is shut down, the monitor doesn't display the PC. And yes, it is set to the correct input(s), HDMI cables are all fine, drivers are up to date. It's probably a fundamental flaw with the switch and I don't see a way of fixing it. Keeping the PS3 on while I'm using my PC is out of the question. The switch doesn't have any other power input so I can't just buy a power adapter. If anyone knows of another cheap/easy way to fix this, it would be much appreciated.
That's probably unlikely so now I'm left with 2 options. I can either buy a female to female hdmi adapter and make it easier to switch between the cables. Basic setup would be, 3 HDMI cables, cable 1: one end connected to monitor, one end connected to adapter. Other two cables connected to PC and PS3 respectively and their other ends connected to the adapter as needed. Easier than fiddling around at the back of the PC/PS3 and i can keep the adapter in an easy to access location for easy switching. Only problem is that I still see this being quite an annoying thing to do but it is extremely cheap.
The other option is a lot more expensive and I don't know if it will be worth it. I could just buy a good switch. But I need at least a 3 or 4 IN/ 1 OUT because I'll be likely adding a PS4 when it comes out. All the ones I've seen are fairly expensive and most don't come with adapters so I have no guarantee they will work either. Could someone maybe point me in the right direction with this because my switch knowledge is limited to say the least.
By the way, I can't connect the PC with DVI/VGA instead of HDMI because my graphics card only has one DVI slot and thats being used by my second monitor (which doesn't have HDMI).
So what's the best approach for this?
