good read. overall the dt770 is a better set of cans than the COP in most areas.

often the dt770 is powered by onboard sound but not to its fullest and perhaps not to the loudest of volumes with the deepest of bass it can support. a soundcard or amp is certainly suggested.

a good soundcard like the soundblaster Z should be able to handle the dt770-80 fine. or, if you want to be able to use the dt770 portable with portable devices you could always get an amp like the fiio e11 or a dac+amp like the e17 which would work well for portable applications as well as at home.
i'd look at the sennheiser hd598. its going to be close but you may be able to find it for $150 somewhere. otherwise the cheaper hd558 is a pretty good choice as well. both are open headphones which means pretty decent soundstage. the 558 has more bass but slightly less quality than than 598. they should be enjoyable for both gaming AND music listening.

so i decided to use a bit more on my headphones. that would be about 200 dollars. i checked a few reviews and now i am deciding between hd598's and ath-m50x is there anything better than these two in that price range?

the m50x is overpriced for what it offers and at the $160ish price point it would be better to gt the dt770 instead. the m50s model however can be had for $100-110 and is excellent for that price range. *if* you are looking for closed cans which are a little bassy. the m50 has a small soundstage so not ideal for gaming (the dt770 is a bit better but still small... all closed headphones are small, open headphones are large soundstage)

yes i know but then again open ones are not "bassy" enough. i am currently deciding between ath-m50x, custom one pro's and dt 770.

edit: what about 990? they are also in my price range

the dt990pro250 is bassier than most of the other open headphones available in the price range and is a good set of cans however it WILL require a decent amplifier to get the most out of them. if you are fine with spending $100 on an amp like the schiit magni (or spending about $50 on an amp if you already have a soundcard with fair amp in it... and just doubleamping the signal) then a good choice.

the dt770-80 is bassy and is a much better choice than the m50x. i'd buy the m50s over the m50x since theres a huge price difference yet no quality difference (i own a m50s) and if you wanted to spend more i'd get the dt770 over that any day.

yeah i read a lot of reviews about those two headphones. they are a little bit less bassy than COP on last two levels of COP's but than the base is a bit overpowered. so im 90% decided for the 770's 80 ohms. since i dont have any amp or sound card what should i get? both?
