Solved! Help funding budget laptop ( used form)

Jan 9, 2017
HELP- I've been obsessing on a new personal laptop for days... and need to sleep (and eat)! . ). Primary need for is a) word processing - I write as a hobby and b) handling personal finances ( excel, quicken...) . also to surf and email

1. What is your budget?
Like to keep under $500 -- even closer to 400. ( can go up to 600 but don't think I need to for my purposes .)'Plus I have to buy office ( must have word / excel )

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

3. What screen resolution do you want?
Want? The high one. Need? The low one. (cheapest should be fine)

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? Use iPad for personal travel --laptop wont go out much. Just from room to room

5. How much battery life do you need?
Doesn't matter

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop?
No games. ( ok, maybe solitaire... so no " gaming")

7. What other tasks do you want to do with laptop? Nothing much I can think of

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
500 should be fine. ( I know ssd more durable but since it a house laptop other s/b okay. )

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links., manufacturer's websites, microcenter , Best Buy

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? As long as it works and meets needs. Not into tech

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? Mmmm.
Not mandatory- save to flash or back up to cloud.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

always had dell latitudes at work and love them . Reliable . (dropped my e7440 on pavement twice-- no problem - just one small chip) . BUT: purchased inspiration 13 3000 ( not sure model) 2 in 1 -- about two years ago-- great for one year then nightmare. the little plug kept breaking then I dropped on kitchen floor ( sense a theme?) and it died . Big big waste of money - had it 14 months -- additional $ 100 for extra warranty did not cover "dropping on way to Microcenter get plug fixed for third time" .

But Still partial to dell! ( I know, I know) . Also consider Lenovo. Been warned off acer tho for the money good deal. Also open to suggestions .

in past ( 2008) had hp it was ok- not in love. Had 2002 toshiba that was awful.

13. What country do you live in?
United States

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
- No touch screen. No 2 in 1. Makes it more fragile
- I'd like intel i5 for speed over i3 but that pushes up cost . And I don't see builds with i5 without a bunch of stuff I don't need but have to buy to get the i5. Is the speed that much better with i5 for my purposes?

I'm looking at
$ 450 sale plus tax ) ( at micro center-amazon is 550)
Inspiration 15 -5000. (I5559-4682SLV).. this has more than what I need I think but is i5
Intel Core i5-6200U Processor 2.30GHz. 6th gen)
Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
8GB DDR3L-1600 RAM
1TB 5,400RPM Hard Drive
Intel HD Graphics 520
SD Card Reader
10/100 Network
802.11ac Wireless
Bluetooth 4.0
15.6" Full HD Touchscreen Display
Windows 10 home 64
(Amazon has newer version one with touch screen what look like more stuff for $430 - makes no sense. I can't get model just asin "B01M161UFE" )

Dell i3 option: 15-3000
Dell Inspiron i3558-5500BLK
-- $310. Amazon
Looks like might be enough
15.6" display, 1366 x 768 HD resolution. LED backlight.
5th Gen Intel Core i3-5015U (3M Cache, 2.10 GHz) mobile
4GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive
Intel HD Graphics 5500
1 HDMI output, 1 USB 3.0 port, built-in media reader, built-in HD webcam with microphone

I'm not glued to dell - just want I looked at now

Thanks thanks thanks
I would suggest that you look for something that has a SSD in it. THAT will make your computer fast. Better to have a SSD and i3 then no SSD and me :)
What about Asus? They make very good laptops.
Do you want some links maybe or you just want to hear our opinion?

Question from Miesfan : "Oops- help "funding budget laptop..."

Well I have experience with both Acer and Asus and the worked and still work well. I've read on the internet that Lenovo laptops have battery problems (don't last that much) but you said that doesn't matter anyway. They have usually the cheapes laptops by specs.
